Racking Inspections

The purpose of racking or rack inspections is to ensure protection and profess protection in the work environment.

The warehouse equipment Manufacturers association (Sema) have set out a set of guide lines for this purpose.

Colocation

The Sema Guide classifies damage into the following three categories: -

· Red Risk

· Orange Risk

· Green Risk

Red Risk.

These are items which are severely damaged well beyond the limitations of the Sema Code. In such circumstances, the racking should be immediately off – Loaded and isolated from hereafter use until mend work is carried out.

Orange Risk.

These items are damaged beyond the limitations of the Sema Code, but not sufficiently serious to guarantee immediate Off-Load of the rack. The rack should be Off-Loaded as soon as potential but regularly within 4 weeks, and should not be re-used until mend work is carried out.

Green Risk.

These are items which are damaged but are within the limitations of the Sema Code. Such items would be recorded as being still convenient for use but be identified for hereafter reference and monitoring.

When inspections of racks and racking is carried out there are a number of assessments that are required, and some of these assessments will include:

· evaluation of damage to uprights and bracing members

· evaluation damage to beams

· Checks are made on Frames: Base Plates: Beam Levels: Floor Fixings: Column Guards and Load Notices.

All racking must display Load Notices stating proper beam and bay loads, and any damaged components must be replaced like for like.
